Punjab Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill Calls for Removal of RGNUL Vice-Chancellor Over Privacy Violation Allegations
New Delhi, India – On Thursday, Raj Lali Gill, Chairperson of the Punjab State Women Commission, wrote to President Droupadi Murmu recommending the immediate removal of Prof Jai Shankar Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL). This follows allegations that he violated the privacy of female students during an unannounced visit to their hostel.
According to the letter, the Commission took ‘suo moto’ notice of the incident, which involved the Vice-Chancellor entering the girls’ hostel without prior notice and making inappropriate remarks about the students’ attire. The students have been protesting, demanding his resignation and stating they will not stop until he is removed from his position.
Gill visited the university on September 25, 2024, to meet with authorities, the district administration, and the affected students. She reported that the Vice-Chancellor’s actions caused significant distress and were a clear violation of the students’ privacy and dignity.
The state’s Human Rights Commission has also filed a complaint against Singh, demanding action to protect the privacy rights of the female students. The Commission has ordered an inquiry to be conducted by the Deputy Commissioner of Patiala.
Despite the ongoing protests, the university announced it would reopen on September 27, 2024, with classes resuming as per the timetable.
