Punjab Police Arrests Over 100 PTI Members Before Lahore Protest
The Punjab Police in Pakistan has arrested more than a hundred members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party ahead of a planned protest in Lahore on September 21. The arrests were made under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Act, which allows for preventive detention.
Among those arrested are Aslam Iqbal, Waqas Amjad, Nadeem Bara, Mehr Wajid, and Mian Hasan, the son of Mehmood ur Rasheed, along with 42 other workers. The police claim these individuals were involved in inciting disturbances and causing problems with law and order.
The PTI rally is scheduled to take place at Minar-e-Pakistan, with party founder Imran Khan calling for action to assert democratic rights. In response to the arrests, PTI has filed a lawsuit in the Lahore High Court. The plea, filed by Sheikh Imtiaz and Yasir Gillani, requests protection against the detention of its leaders and workers, arguing that their constitutional right to hold rallies is being violated.
The petitioners have asked the court to direct the police to stop making arrests and to allow a peaceful demonstration.
