Punjab Ministers Urge Governor for Timely Rice Lifting and Wheat Production Support

Punjab Ministers Meet Governor for Agricultural Support

On October 28, Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced that a group of Punjab cabinet ministers met with Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. They submitted a memorandum urging the timely lifting of rice from mandis and support for wheat production in the upcoming season. The ministers highlighted the need to clear paddy stocks to avoid last year’s issues caused by delayed rice procurement.

Challenges Faced by Farmers

Farmers in Punjab have been anxious about selling their paddy produce at government wholesale markets, leading to protests at around 60 locations. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the state government has addressed most demands from rice millers and is hopeful for a resolution with the Home Minister’s involvement.

Economic Importance of the Harvest Season

CM Mann emphasized the economic significance of the harvest season, describing it as a festival for Punjab. He noted that any delay in paddy procurement could impact wheat planting. Mann also requested the Centre to increase the procurement rate for dry harvest from 0.5% to 1%.

Punjab plans to supply 180 lakh metric tonnes to the Centre this season, but concerns remain about potential delays similar to last year.
