Punjab Faces Health Crisis Due to Severe Smog

Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb Addresses the Issue

In Lahore, Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has declared the dense smog across Punjab a major health crisis. During a press conference, she discussed the harmful effects of air pollution on public health and the government’s response to the situation.

Impact on Cities and Health

Punjab, especially Lahore and Multan, has seen dangerous smog levels. Multan’s Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeded 2,000 twice, while Lahore was recently the world’s most polluted city with an AQI of 1,591. This pollution has caused nearly two million cases of respiratory and related diseases, affecting children and vulnerable groups the most.

Government’s Response

Aurangzeb linked the smog crisis to climate change and mentioned a 10-year climate change policy by the Punjab government. Measures include distributing super-seeders to reduce stubble burning, installing emission control systems in industries, and demolishing brick kilns. Infrastructure for vehicle fitness and AQI monitoring has been set up, and 30 gas analysers are checking vehicle emissions.

Green Initiatives

To address Lahore’s low forest cover, the government is implementing a “Green Master Plan” to increase greenery. Aurangzeb urged journalists to raise awareness about smog.

Potential Drastic Measures

EPCCD Secretary Raja Jahangir Anwar mentioned possible drastic measures like a “complete lockdown” and school closures if smog persists. Electric buses are planned for next year.

Judicial Involvement

Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court stressed the need for a comprehensive 10-year policy, preventing agricultural land conversion, and promoting tree planting and water treatment in homes.

Despite the challenges, Aurangzeb remains hopeful that collective efforts and long-term policies will alleviate the smog crisis.
