Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann raised concerns about the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) after wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics for exceeding the 50 kg weight limit. Vinesh was one win away from securing India’s first gold medal at the event.

Weight Issue

Vinesh was set to face United States wrestler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt but was disqualified for being 2.7 kg over the allowed weight. Chief Medical Officer of the Indian Contingent, Doctor Dinshaw Pardiwala, confirmed the weight discrepancy.

Bhagwant Mann’s Criticism

Bhagwant Mann, speaking in Charkhi Dadri, questioned the IOA’s role and the responsibilities of Vinesh’s coaches and physiotherapists. He criticized the lack of oversight and accountability, suggesting that the IOA members were not fulfilling their duties.

Family’s Reaction

Vinesh’s uncle, Mahavir Phogat, expressed his disappointment but remained hopeful for future success. He assured that Vinesh would be prepared for the next Olympics.

IOA’s Response

IOA President PT Usha confirmed that the Wrestling Federation of India filed an appeal to reconsider Vinesh’s disqualification. She expressed her support for Vinesh and emphasized the efforts made by the medical team and the IOA to meet competition requirements.
