Mohali (Punjab) [India], August 28: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann responded to recent remarks by actor-turned-politician and MP Kangana Ranaut regarding the farmers’ protests. Mann stated that people elected Kangana to resolve issues in her parliamentary constituency, Mandi, and not to make ‘absurd’ and ‘baseless’ statements.

Kangana, an MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, suggested that the farmers’ protests could have led to a Bangladesh-like crisis if the leadership was not strong enough. The BJP distanced itself from her statement and asked her to refrain from making such comments in the future.

Bhagwant Mann said, ‘People elected her as an MP to resolve the issues of Mandi constituency, and not to make absurd and baseless statements that would create unrest in society. It is an incorrect statement; an MP should not make such statements that would hurt someone.’ He added, ‘BJP should not just say that it is a statement made in a personal capacity, they should also control this…If you make such absurd statements, then naturally there will be anger. So, I would like to tell the BJP Government to control its MPs…All kinds of statements are made for farmers’ protest, this is intolerable.’

Meanwhile, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sent a legal notice to Kangana and the producers of the film ‘Emergency’, alleging misrepresentation of Sikh history. The film, set to release on September 6, features Kangana portraying former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and has drawn criticism from the Sikh community for its alleged negative portrayal of Sikhs.

SGPC spokesperson Gurcharan Singh Grewal said, ‘Kangana Ranaut, who is known for creating new controversies, arrived in parliament and the BJP has shrugged off her statements. A notice was sent today to Kangana Ranaut and the people who released that film. The trailer that came, which was seen by the people, should be removed from all platforms and an apology should be sought for this.’ The notice was sent by the secretary of the Shiromani Committee, Iman Pratap Singh.

Protesters in Bathinda burnt an effigy of Kangana Ranaut. Sikh leader Gurdeep Singh said that Kangana Ranaut is spreading hatred against the farmers and Sikhs of the country.
