Punjab and Haryana High Court Clears Path for Panchayat Elections
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has made a significant decision by dismissing over 1,000 petitions that sought to cancel the upcoming panchayat elections. The court also lifted the ban on 206 panchayats, allowing the elections to proceed as planned on October 15. The High Court emphasized that only the Election Commission has the power to intervene in the electoral process. It also ordered that the elections be documented through videography and recording.
Despite the ruling, attorneys for the petitioners plan to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court, indicating ongoing legal disputes. The elections are set to elect 13,237 ‘Sarpanches’ and 83,437 ‘Panches’. Advocate Hakam Singh mentioned that nearly 1,000 writ petitions were filed, and all except one concerning videography were dismissed. The stay on 250 writ petitions was also vacated, and they plan to approach the Supreme Court.
Earlier, the Punjab High Court had refused to halt the elections across the state but did pause the process in certain villages due to nomination filing issues. Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, criticized the Aam Aadmi Party for the nomination complications, blaming government officials for negligence. He noted that the Chief Minister assured free and fair elections, but officials were absent from their offices, causing uncertainty among candidates.
