Pune District Imposes Safety Measures After Bhushi Dam Tragedy

In response to a tragic incident near Bhushi Dam where five individuals were swept away by a waterfall, the Pune district administration has taken swift action to ensure tourist safety during the monsoon season. Prohibitory orders have been issued at various popular picnic spots, including waterfalls and dams in Maval, Bhor, Velha, Junnar, Mulshi, Khed, and Ambegaon tehsils, effective from July 2 to 31.

The measures include identifying and marking dangerous areas, deploying lifeguards and rescue teams, and installing warning boards. The order, issued by Pune District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase under section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagari Suraksha Sanhita and the Disaster Management Act, 2005, prohibits gatherings of five or more people, entering deep water bodies, taking selfies, creating reels, and bans vehicles within a one-kilometer radius of waterfalls. Alcohol consumption and sales are also banned at these sites.

Violators will face action under Section 223 of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 and the Disaster Management Act 2005. Additionally, over 60 makeshift shops near Bhushi Dam were demolished during a joint anti-encroachment drive by the Lonavala Municipal Council and Central Railway.
