PTI Rally in Islamabad: Police Clash and Imran Khan’s Imprisonment
Islamabad [Pakistan], September 8: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has accused the police of firing shots at its members during a rally in Islamabad. The rally was held to demand the release of PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently in prison.
PTI shared on social media that the police used heavy shelling against peaceful protestors, calling it an ‘Undeclared Martial Law.’ The party criticized the police’s actions as shameful and cowardly, stating that these acts only strengthen the people’s resolve to fight for their ‘Haqeeqi Azadi’ (True Freedom).
In a subsequent post, PTI expressed that the police officers should be ashamed for attacking a peaceful crowd. The party emphasized that the people sent a strong message through their participation in the rally.
The rally began on the outskirts of Islamabad after being denied permission multiple times. PTI leader Hammad Azhar addressed the crowd, stating that supporters gathered to establish the rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution. He expressed confidence in securing Imran Khan’s release.
The rally was initially scheduled for July and later August but was postponed due to security concerns. Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since last August, was expected to be released after a court accepted appeals against his conviction in the Iddat case. However, he was arrested again in a new Toshakhana case.
PTI has been trying to get approval for a public meeting in the capital for several months but faced repeated denials. The party approached the Islamabad High Court for permission in March. Despite receiving approval, the rally faced blockades and restrictions from the police, citing terrorism threats.
Senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser criticized the government’s actions, calling it a ‘fascist government’ creating a hostile environment. PTI’s Punjab spokesperson, Shaukat Basra, also condemned the police’s unconstitutional orders to stop workers from attending the rally.
