PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan Criticizes Government’s Phone Tapping Decision

Islamabad [Pakistan], July 11: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has criticized the government’s decision to allow the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to tap phones, calling it “unconstitutional.” He stated that this move opposes Pakistan’s constitution, which guarantees the privacy of all citizens. Speaking to the media, Barrister Gohar said that only those engaged in criminal activity should be monitored.

When asked about PTI founder Imran Khan’s support of phone tapping while he was in power, Barrister Gohar responded, “Whatever it is, it should be according to the constitution.”

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif supported the government’s decision, emphasizing its importance for national security and the fight against terrorism. He stated, “In matters of national security, this measure becomes necessary and should be supported by everyone.” He also reminded PTI members of Imran Khan’s previous support for phone tapping during his tenure.

The government granted the ISI permission to intercept calls and messages “in the interest of national security,” as per a notification released by the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. This authority was granted under Section 54 of the Pakistan Telecommunication Act.
