Protests in Himachal Pradesh Over Alleged Illegal Mosque Construction

In Sanjauli, Himachal Pradesh, protests have erupted over the alleged illegal construction of a mosque. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to understand the reasons behind the issue and its impact on local demographics. He stated, “We need to go into the depth of this issue to find the reasons behind it and how it is affecting local demography. There are serious reasons behind the anger in people there.”
Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Jairam Thakur, criticized the Sukhu government for delaying action against the alleged illegal construction. He said, “Himachal Pradesh is a peaceful state. There have hardly been any community conflicts here. But, now the situation that has emerged, the government should have taken active measures against it, and people are agitated because of the delay.”
On Tuesday, Jairam Thakur also criticized the Congress government for not initiating the process of identity registration and verification of street vendors, leading to streets being filled with unknown people.
Earlier on Wednesday, as protests intensified, police used water cannons and resorted to lathicharge to disperse protestors heading towards the Sanjauli area of Shimla. Protestors clashed with security forces while entering the Dhalli Tunnel East portal during their protest march. The protests have been called by Hindu organizations over the alleged illegal construction of the Sanjauli mosque.
