Protests Erupt Over Deaths at Asha Kiran Shelter Home in Delhi
The workers of All India Mahila Congress in Delhi have started a protest against the Delhi government, demanding the resignation of Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi. This comes after an official report revealed that Asha Kiran shelter home in Rohini recorded 14 deaths in July, the highest number in a single month.
The report stated that a total of 25 deaths occurred since February 2024, with 14 deaths (6 males and 8 females) happening in July alone. The General Secretary of All India Mahila Congress, Neetu Verma Soin, described these deaths as ‘murders’ and highlighted that the shelter is overcrowded, housing 450 children in a space meant for 250.
Neetu Verma Soin demanded an inquiry and the resignation of responsible officials and ministers. She emphasized the need for justice for the children and criticized the Delhi government for not allowing them to meet the children.
Delhi Minister and AAP leader Atishi responded by acknowledging the seriousness of the situation and announced a magisterial inquiry. She assured that strict action would be taken if any negligence is found in the report, which is expected within 24 hours.
