Protests Erupt in Siliguri and Kolkata Over Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death
The residents of Subhas Pally in Siliguri took to the streets on Sunday to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month.
People in Siliguri held a protest march with firetorches, expressing their anger over the incident. Earlier, people from different communities in Kolkata also held a protest march from College Square to Dharmatala, carrying banners that read, ‘I want justice for my sisters.’
TMC leaders and workers joined the protests in Kolkata, demanding that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) disclose the progress of the investigation and calling for capital punishment for the culprits.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the National Conference of District Judiciary, emphasized the need for stricter laws and faster decisions in cases related to atrocities against women to ensure their safety.
The case, which has caused widespread outrage, has been transferred to the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The tragic death of the trainee doctor on August 9 has led to a political clash, with the BJP demanding the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.
