Protests Erupt in Pakistan Over High Electricity Bills and Taxes
Protests have erupted across Pakistan due to high electricity bills and increased taxes. Traders, led by the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), and political parties like Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are demanding the government withdraw the tariff hikes.
Nationwide Protests
The traders’ community staged protests in various cities including Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Sukkur, Tando Allah Yar, and more. They demanded the government to withdraw the increase in electricity tariffs and taxes.
Specific Protests
In Multan, the Chamber of Small Traders organized a protest. Traders in Sukkur marched from Sarafa Bazaar to Ghanta Ghar Chowk. Residents of Tando Allah Yar blocked roads while chanting slogans against the government.
Warnings and Announcements
The All-Pakistan Traders Association (APTA) warned the federal government to abolish additional taxes by June 30 or face further actions. Ajmal Baloch, President of APTA, stated that the government has committed an injustice regarding electricity bills.
Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) head Hafiz Naeemur Rehman announced a protest in Islamabad on July 12 against high taxes and exorbitant electricity tariffs. The JI announced its ‘Haq Do Awam Ko’ (give rights to the masses) movement, with Rehman leading the rally.
