Roopa Ganguly and Agnimitra Paul Demand Justice

In Kolkata, West Bengal, BJP leaders including MLA Agnimitra Paul and actor-turned-politician Roopa Ganguly staged a protest on Friday against the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roopa Ganguly demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also the health minister. She stated, ‘Mamata Banerjee should resign.’

Ganguly emphasized that the protest was not just political but also involved common people, noting that lakhs of women joined the protest on August 14. She claimed that even members of the TMC joined the protest. Addressing the vandalism at the medical college, Ganguly accused local goons of pre-planned violence and questioned the police’s actions.

BJP leaders protesting near Shambazar Metro were detained by police. Meanwhile, doctors and medical students across India continued to protest, demanding justice for the woman doctor. A 12-hour general strike was called in Siliguri by the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), disrupting normal life and closing most shops in the city.

Dr. Shahriar Alam of SUCI (Communist) stated that the strike had a significant impact, with people responding spontaneously by not taking out their vehicles or opening shops. The strike was called to protest the heinous incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Earlier, teams from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) arrived at RG Kar Medical College to investigate the case. Following a Calcutta High Court order, the CBI has taken over the case and sent specialized teams from Delhi.
