Protests Erupt in Kolkata Over Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death at RG Kar Medical College
A large crowd gathered at the Jadavpur 8B bus terminus in Kolkata to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9.
Demands for Justice
Protestors are demanding justice for the victim. One protestor said, “We have gathered here to demand justice for the doctor. We just demand justice, nothing else.” Another protestor emphasized the need for safer nights for girls, questioning why only girls suffer in such cases.
Accusations of Corruption
Aditi Rao, another protestor, accused the TMC government of corruption, stating that justice has not been served due to the Chief Minister’s inaction. “It has been more than one month since the incident occurred, but she (Mamata Banerjee) has not done anything. We will sit here and protest till the night justice is not served,” Rao said.
Widespread Protests
The incident has sparked protests across West Bengal and the country. In Siliguri, people from the medical fraternity, activists, and local citizens formed a human chain. Sculptors in Kumartuli and rickshaw pullers in Kolkata also held separate protests. A torch march was organized in Kolkata as well.
Political Repercussions
The incident has led to a war of words between the BJP and the state government. BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato has called for an investigation and the arrest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Amid mounting pressure, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar offered his resignation, criticizing the government’s delayed response.
