Kolkata, West Bengal – On Sunday, people from various walks of life formed a human chain to protest the brutal rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked widespread outrage across West Bengal and the country.

Public Outcry

Protestors criticized the TMC government for its inadequate response. One protestor demanded the strictest punishment for those involved, stating, “Our government did not react as it should have after this incident. There has been a lot of injustice, and all the evidence has disappeared, which is causing delays in justice.”

Another protestor emphasized the urgency for justice, saying, “We want justice, and we want it as soon as possible. With this human chain, we are sending the message that we are all standing here, watching the courts to see if we are getting the justice we deserve.”

Continued Protests

Artists and technicians from the Bengali film industry also held a protest march demanding justice. A protestor declared, “As long as we are not getting due justice, the protest will be on.”

In Siliguri, people from the medical fraternity, activists, and local citizens formed a human chain to demand justice. Various groups, including sculptors, BJP workers, and rickshaw pullers, also took to the streets to protest.

Political Repercussions

Amid mounting pressure, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar offered his resignation, criticizing the government’s delayed response. BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato called for an investigation and arrest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with health scams.

Legal Actions

The victim’s family accused the Kolkata Police of attempting to offer them money. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, has been arrested. The CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch also arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh and three others for alleged corruption at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ghosh has been remanded to 8-day police custody, with the next hearing on September 10.

Legislative Response

The West Bengal Assembly passed the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024,’ introducing the death penalty or life-long imprisonment for rape. The Bill has been referred to President Droupadi Murmu for consideration.
