Artists and technicians from the Bengali film industry, along with various groups, held protests in Kolkata demanding justice for a trainee woman doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College. The incident has led to widespread demonstrations, including a human chain in Siliguri and a torch march in Kolkata.

A protestor stated, “As long as we are not getting due justice, the protest will be on.” Another added, “We are fighting for justice, we want justice and we will get justice. We are fighting for ourselves, every lady and our protection.”

BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato has called for an investigation into Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s involvement in health scams. TMC Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar offered his resignation, criticizing the government’s response to the incident.

The West Bengal Assembly passed the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024’, introducing the death penalty or life-long imprisonment for rape. The bill has been referred to President Droupadi Murmu for consideration.
