Political Tensions Rise in Bangladesh
On November 10, 2024, Dhaka witnessed a massive protest as various political groups, including the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami, took to the streets. This was in response to the Awami League’s planned protest to commemorate the death anniversary of activist Nur Hossain.
Statements and Reactions
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, criticized the Awami League, calling it a “fascist party” and warned against any rallies. The interim government, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, has vowed to maintain law and order.
The Awami League, however, announced a protest march demanding the removal of undemocratic forces and the restoration of democracy. This marks the first public demonstration since Sheikh Hasina’s departure in August, following a student-led movement that resulted in her ousting.
Legal Actions and Accusations
The interim government has initiated trials against Sheikh Hasina and Awami League leaders for crimes against humanity. In retaliation, the Awami League plans to file 15,000 cases against the interim government at the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing them of similar crimes.
Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, an Awami League leader, has already filed a complaint at the ICC, alleging genocide and crimes against humanity during the student movement in August.
