Protests at Nepal’s Pokhara Airport Against China’s Belt and Road Initiative

On July 8, over 200 locals and activists gathered at Nepal’s Pokhara International Airport to protest against China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The protest was organized by the National Unity Movement and coincided with a visit by a parliamentary committee investigating embezzlement claims during the airport’s construction.

Key Demands

The protestors raised slogans demanding the full operation of Pokhara International Airport, an investigation into corruption during its construction, and the conversion of Chinese loans to grants. Binay Yadav, chairman of the National Unity Movement, criticized China, alleging that it aims to capture the airport, similar to its actions in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Concerns Raised

The construction of the airport, primarily funded and executed by Chinese companies, has raised concerns about the quality of work, oversight manipulation, and the debt burden on Nepal. The airport’s association with China’s BRI has also created diplomatic tensions with India, making it difficult to attract international flights.

Political Reactions

On June 27, Nepali Congress lawmakers warned the government against taking BRI loans without consultation. Former Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud suggested accepting grants instead of loans to avoid financial traps. He emphasized the need for feasible plans and market management before taking on large projects.
