Protesters in Bangladesh Demand President Shahabuddin’s Resignation
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, protesters have gathered outside Banga Bhaban, the presidential palace, demanding the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The protest, led by the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, began with a rally at Shaheed Minar, where they announced a list of five demands, including the president’s resignation.
Later that night, the protesters moved towards Banga Bhaban, where they were met with barricades set up by the army. Despite the blockade, the protesters stood firm, chanting slogans for the president’s resignation. One protester stated, “The President is a crony of Hasina’s authoritarian government. He must resign immediately.”
Mohammed Shahabuddin, also known as Chuppu, is the 16th President of Bangladesh, elected unopposed in 2023 under the Awami League’s nomination. The student movement has also called for the abolition of the 1972 constitution, a ban on the Awami League’s student organization, and the disqualification of Members of Parliament elected in 2018 and 2024 under Sheikh Hasina.
The protests, which began in July over a government job quota system, have evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations. In response to the growing unrest, Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister on August 5, fleeing to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was established. Yunus was sworn in as the head of the interim government on August 8.
