New Delhi, India – Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has strongly criticized the central government’s decision to observe June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day). This date marks the imposition of the Emergency in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s Response

On Saturday, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated that those who have repeatedly attacked the spirit of the Constitution and democracy would celebrate ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ with negative politics. She emphasized that the people who have faith in the Constitution will protect it.

The great people of India fought a historic battle to achieve their independence and constitution. Those who made the constitution, those who have faith in the constitution, will protect the constitution.

Government’s Announcement

On Friday, the central government declared that June 25 would be observed as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to remember the 1975 Emergency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the Emergency as a ‘dark phase of Indian history’ and stated that the day would honor those who suffered during that time.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also commented, saying that the day would remind people of the significant sacrifices made by those who faced hardships during the Emergency.

Opposition’s Reaction

The announcement has triggered strong reactions from opposition parties. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of celebrating ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ every day for the past ten years by undermining the self-respect of the poor and deprived sections of society.

Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh criticized the BJP for trying to divert attention from its anti-people policies by bringing up the Emergency.

Historical Context

The Emergency of 1975 in India is remembered as a period of political turmoil and suppression of civil liberties. Declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, it saw the suspension of fundamental rights and strict censorship to quell political dissent.
