New Delhi, India – Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the central government on Friday for its goods and services tax (GST) policies, claiming that small businesses and MSMEs are struggling under the BJP-led government’s policies. She cited an incident involving a restaurant owner from Coimbatore who reportedly apologized to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman after questioning her about GST.

Priyanka Gandhi stated, “Ask Questions, Get Humiliated–That’s Modi Government’s Response to Accountability!” She added that the restaurant owner was humiliated for raising a legitimate concern about the GST burden and was forced to apologize on camera.

She further accused the government of favoring wealthy cronies with tax cuts and loan waivers while small businesses suffer. “The government needs to stop ignoring the people and start delivering a GST that works for everyone–not just the rich,” she said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also criticized the government, calling the incident a display of the BJP’s “arrogance of power.” He stressed the need for a “simple, uniform, moderate and rational GST on essential items” and accused the government of benefiting large crony friends at the expense of small business owners.

BJP leader K Annamalai apologized on behalf of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit for making the conversation between the restaurant owner and the Finance Minister public. He expressed regret for the unintended breach of privacy and requested that the matter be laid to rest.
