Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Historic Visit to Guyana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a significant journey to Guyana from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This marks the final leg of his three-nation tour and makes him the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Guyana in 56 years.
India-CARICOM Summit
During his visit, PM Modi will co-chair the second India-CARICOM Summit with the Prime Minister of Grenada, the current Chairman of CARICOM. Leaders from all CARICOM countries will be present.
Strengthening India-Guyana Relations
PM Modi is scheduled to hold talks with President Irfaan Ali and address the National Assembly of Guyana. The formal structure of India-Guyana relations includes a bilateral joint commission and periodic consultations between their foreign offices.
Cultural and Economic Cooperation
Cultural exchange programs and a joint business council between the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) further strengthen ties. Developmental cooperation is facilitated through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program, offering 50 scholarships annually. Additionally, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) provides scholarships for Guyanese students.
Trade and Investment
India has extended credit facilities to Guyana for fields like agriculture and information technology. Indian companies are interested in sectors such as biofuels, energy, minerals, and pharmaceuticals. While trade turnover is modest, the trend is promising.
Global Engagement
PM Modi's visit follows his participation in the G20 summit in Brazil, where he highlighted India's role in combating hunger and poverty and held a bilateral meeting with Australia.
