Prime Minister Narendra Modi Approves Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project in Maharashtra
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project corridor in Maharashtra. This 29-km corridor will feature 22 stations and will run along the west side of Thane city, bordered by the Ulhas River and Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
The project aims to provide a sustainable and efficient mode of transport, helping Thane city reach its economic potential and reducing traffic congestion. It is also expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.12,200.10 crore, with funding from the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and bilateral agencies.
Innovative financing methods, such as selling station naming rights and asset monetization, will also be used. The project is expected to be completed by 2029 and will benefit thousands of daily commuters, including students and office workers, by offering faster and more economical transport options.
The daily ridership on the metro corridors is projected to be 6.47 lakh in 2029, 7.61 lakh in 2035, and 8.72 lakh in 2045. Maha Metro will execute the project, including civil, electromechanical, and other associated works. Pre-bid activities and tender document preparations have already begun, with contracts to be floated for bidding soon.
