Prime Minister Narendra Modi Approves Major Railway Projects in India

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to two significant railway projects. These projects, with a combined estimated cost of Rs.6,798 crore, aim to enhance connectivity and boost socio-economic growth.

Project Details

The first project involves doubling the railway lines between Narkatiaganj-Raxaul-Sitamarhi-Darbhanga and Sitamarhi-Muzaffarpur, covering a distance of 256 kilometers. This will improve connections to Nepal, North-east India, and border areas, facilitating both passenger and goods trains.

The second project is the construction of a new railway line between Errupalem and Namburu via Amaravati, spanning 57 kilometers. This line will pass through the NTR Vijayawada and Guntur districts in Andhra Pradesh and the Khammam district in Telangana.

Impact and Benefits

The projects will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 313 kilometers, impacting eight districts across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar. The new line will connect 168 villages and serve around 12 lakh people with nine new stations. The multi-tracking project will benefit two aspirational districts, Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur, covering 388 villages and about 9 lakh people.

These routes are crucial for transporting commodities like agricultural products, coal, and steel. The capacity increase is expected to handle an additional 31 million tonnes of freight annually. The environmentally friendly railway system will help reduce CO2 emissions by 168 crore kilograms, equivalent to planting 7 crore trees.

Strategic Importance

The new line will provide direct access to Amaravati, the proposed capital of Andhra Pradesh, enhancing mobility for industries and residents. The multi-tracking will ease congestion on busy railway sections, improving service reliability.

These projects are part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aimed at integrated planning for seamless connectivity of people, goods, and services.
