Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Kazan, Russia, to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit. The summit, chaired by Russia, will see leaders from BRICS member countries and invited nations gather to discuss global issues. PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Before departing India, PM Modi expressed the importance of BRICS for India and his eagerness for discussions on various subjects. He emphasized the significance of BRICS as a platform for dialogue on global development, climate change, and economic cooperation. The Prime Minister’s visit aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between India and Russia.
The summit, themed ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,’ will provide an opportunity to evaluate BRICS initiatives and explore future collaboration. This visit marks PM Modi’s second trip to Russia this year, following his attendance at the India-Russia Annual Summit in Moscow, where he received Russia’s highest civilian award.
BRICS, originally formed by Russia, India, and China, expanded to include South Africa in 2010. The group further expanded in 2024 with the addition of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
