Guwahati, Assam [India], September 10: Farmers and entrepreneurs from Assam and the North Eastern region have praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his initiative to promote millet cultivation and consumption. They are experiencing benefits from the government’s support.

Support from the Government

Tago Tanu, an entrepreneur and founder of KT Marketing in Arunachal Pradesh, shared that the government has been supportive through NERAMAC, helping them promote millet products across various states. Tanu mentioned, “We are getting lots of support and response to promote our products in every state. Recently we visited Tripura, Meghalaya, and now Guwahati, and later we will promote our products in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim also.”

Yagum, another entrepreneur from Arunachal Pradesh, emphasized the importance of utilizing government facilities for millet cultivation and consumption. “We also want to make our people aware of the benefits of millets,” she said.

Training and Opportunities

Mayashri Baruah, an entrepreneur from Guwahati, highlighted the training and opportunities provided by the government. She stated, “We get training from the government to produce value-added millet products. I got the opportunity to take part in the G20 to represent Assam. Next, I will go to take part in the World Food Expo, and the government will sponsor me.”

Event Highlights

A two-day event titled “Promotion of Millets in India” was organized by NERAMAC, a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER), Government of India, in Guwahati. The event aimed to generate awareness and promote the benefits of millet consumption.

Commodore Rajiv Ashok (Retd), Managing Director of NERAMAC, highlighted the nutritional benefits of millets and the Indian government’s efforts to promote them. Loken Das, Chief General Manager of NABARD, Assam, commended NERAMAC’s efforts in the Agri-Horti sector and emphasized the superfood status of millets.

Tej Prasad Bhusal, ACS, Government of Assam, stressed the importance of preserving and promoting millets for food security and agri-diversity. The event featured stalls displaying millet products and saw the participation of around 200 beneficiaries, including farmers and entrepreneurs from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
