Prime Minister Modi to Nominate Om Birla as Lok Sabha Speaker Amid Opposition Challenge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will move the motion today in the Lok Sabha to choose Om Birla as the Speaker of the lower house. Rajnath Singh will second the motion. The opposition’s INDIA bloc has nominated K Suresh as their candidate against Birla.

In today’s session, the remaining MPs who have not taken the oath will do so. Following this, PM Modi will bring the motion for Om Birla to be chosen as the Speaker. Union Ministers like Lallan Singh, Jitan Ram Manjhi, Amit Shah, Chirag Paswan, HD Kumaraswamy, and Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu will also support the motion.

Shiv Sena MP Arvind Ganpat Sawant, Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadauria, and NCP MP Supriya Sule will move the motion for K Suresh to be chosen as the Speaker. The election will take place when the Lok Sabha resumes today.

Prime Minister Modi will also introduce the newly inducted ministers and ministers of state. Traditionally, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker were elected through consensus, but this time, the contest is between BJP’s Om Birla, a three-time MP from Kota, Rajasthan, and Congress’ Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-term MP from Kerala’s Mavelikara.

Both the BJP and Congress have issued whips to their members, mandating their presence in the Lok Sabha from 11 am until the end of the proceedings. The INDIA bloc is likely to push for a voice vote. The NDA holds a majority with 293 MPs, while the opposition INDIA bloc has 234 MPs.
