Prime Minister Modi to Attend ASEAN-India and East Asia Summits in Laos

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to participate in the ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit in Laos. The meetings aim to evaluate and enhance India’s relations with ASEAN countries. Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary East of the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted the importance of these summits, noting that this marks the tenth anniversary of the Prime Minister’s Act East policy.

Significance of the Summits

The ASEAN-India Summit will focus on reviewing the progress of India-ASEAN relations and planning future cooperation. The theme of ‘connectivity and resilience’ will be emphasized, with India supporting increased connectivity with ASEAN nations. Currently, 20% of the Indian diaspora resides in ASEAN countries, and direct flights connect India with seven ASEAN nations, with plans to expand this further.

East Asia Summit

The East Asia Summit includes 10 ASEAN countries and eight partners, including India, aiming to promote peace and stability in the region. Prime Minister Modi will discuss the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative, which involves collaboration with several ASEAN and East Asia partners. The revival of Nalanda University is also part of the East Asia Summit initiatives.

Bilateral Meetings

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Lao PDR, Sonexay Siphandone, to strengthen the historical and friendly relations between the two countries.
