Prime Minister Modi Meets Odisha MPs After BJP’s Big Win in 2024 Elections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with all the Odisha MPs in parliament on Monday to discuss regional issues and development plans.

BJP’s Success in 2024 Elections

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 20 out of 21 seats in Odisha, increasing their previous tally by 12 seats from 2019. The Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) failed to win a single seat, a significant loss from their 12 seats in the 2019 elections.

Factors Behind BJP’s Victory

During the campaign, the BJP capitalized on Naveen Patnaik’s declining health and anti-incumbency sentiments. They also highlighted V K Pandian’s outsider status to attract Odia voters. The BJP emphasized the success of double-engine governments in other states, persuading voters to support them in both Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

State Assembly Elections

In the state assembly elections, the BJP secured a comfortable majority by winning 78 out of 147 seats. The BJD won 51 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 74, while the Indian National Congress secured 14 seats.

End of BJD’s 24-Year Rule

After a massive defeat in both the State Assembly and Parliamentary elections, the 24-year tenure of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik came to an end. BJP’s Mohan Majhi took oath as the new Chief Minister of Odisha on June 12. The Biju Janata Dal had ruled Odisha since 1997 until the 2024 election results.
