On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Maa Mahamaya airport in Darima, Chhattisgarh. This new airport is set to benefit millions in Surguja and nearby districts by providing easier access to major cities across India. The airport connects the remote tribal district of Surguja with the rest of the country, offering a cost-effective and time-saving travel option.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Governor Ramen Deka, and Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu were present at the inauguration. Chief Minister Sai highlighted the airport’s role in integrating tribal communities and providing new opportunities for education, healthcare, and employment. He emphasized the airport’s contribution to the dream of a developed India by 2047.

Local entrepreneur Rajesh from Ambikapur expressed that the airport will make transporting products to other cities easier, reducing the time and cost compared to road travel. The airport is also expected to boost tourism in the region, making it easier for tourists to visit attractions like the hill station of Manpur and the historic caves of Ramgarh.

The Maa Mahamaya Airport was upgraded under the Government of India’s Regional Connectivity Scheme, covering 365 acres and costing Rs80 crore. It can accommodate 72-seater aircraft and handle up to 500,000 passengers annually. Previously, PM Modi inaugurated developmental projects worth over Rs 6,100 crores in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
