Prime Minister Modi Discusses Bangladesh and Ukraine at Quad Summit in the US
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that the situation in Bangladesh was a key topic of discussion at the Quad summit. Misri mentioned that there was an exchange of views on the situation in Bangladesh, which has seen violence and chaos, especially targeting minorities, after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India.
In a press briefing, Misri also spoke about the peace proposal related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing India’s ongoing conversations with multiple parties involved. He noted that these discussions are crucial but require more work to achieve outcomes.
The Quad countries, including the US, Australia, Japan, and India, expressed deep concerns over the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. They affirmed their support for international law and the principles of the UN Charter, including territorial integrity and peaceful resolution of disputes. The leaders underscored the negative impacts of the Ukraine war on global food and energy security, especially for developing countries.
US President Joe Biden hosted the Quad Leaders’ summit in Wilmington, Delaware, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also in attendance. The Quad, known as the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, promotes a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. A joint declaration stated that the Quad is more strategically aligned than ever and is a force for good in the region.
