New Delhi [India], August 7: Shortly after India faced a setback at the Paris Olympics with the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the 50 Kg Women’s wrestling final, Prime Minister Narendra Modi consoled the grappler. In a post on X, the Prime Minister called Vinesh a ‘champion among champions’ and expressed his support.

Prime Minister Modi said, ‘Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head-on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.’

Sources revealed that the Prime Minister spoke to Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha to get firsthand information on the issue and explore options to support Vinesh. He urged PT Usha to file a strong protest regarding her disqualification if it could help Vinesh.

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event after weighing in a few grams over the 50 kg mark. She was scheduled to compete against the United States’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal match. The Indian Olympic contingent issued a statement expressing regret over the disqualification and requested privacy for Vinesh.

Despite this setback, India remains hopeful for medals from other athletes. Avinash Sable will compete in the 3000 Metre Steeplechase final on Thursday morning, IST. Sable finished fifth in the semi-finals, securing his spot in the final. Additionally, Tokyo Olympics silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will compete in the Women’s 49 KG category, and wrestler Antim Panghal will participate in the Women’s Freestyle 53 KG category.

India has won 3 medals so far at the Paris Olympics, all from the shooting competition.
