Prime Minister Modi Approves New Housing Schemes for Urban and Rural Families
New Delhi, August 9: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0. This new scheme aims to provide financial help to 1 crore urban poor and middle-class families to build, buy, or rent affordable houses in urban areas over the next five years. The government will provide Rs 2.30 lakh crore for this scheme.
The cabinet also approved the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) for the years 2024-2029. This scheme will help build two crore more houses in rural areas, with financial assistance of Rs 1.20 lakh for houses in plain areas and Rs 1.30 lakh for houses in North Eastern states and hill states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
PMAY-U is a major program by the Indian government to provide strong, all-weather houses to eligible urban families. So far, 1.18 crore houses have been approved, and more than 85.5 lakh houses have been built and given to families.
In his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2023, Prime Minister Modi announced a new scheme to help weaker and middle-class families own houses. On June 10, 2024, the Union Cabinet decided to help 3 crore more rural and urban families build houses to meet the growing need for housing.
PMAY-U 2.0, with an investment of Rs 10 lakh crore, will help one crore families get better housing. Families with no strong house anywhere in the country can benefit from this scheme. It will be implemented through various methods like Beneficiary-Led Construction, Affordable Housing in Partnership, Redeemable Housing Vouchers, and Affordable Rental Housing.
PMAY-G aims to build two crore more houses in rural areas from 2024 to 2029, benefiting nearly 10 crore people. This will help houseless people and those living in poor conditions to build safe and good-quality houses with basic amenities, ensuring safety, hygiene, and social inclusion.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) was launched in April 2016 to achieve the goal of ‘Housing for All’ in rural areas by March 2024, with a target of building 2.95 crore houses with basic amenities.
