Prime Minister Modi Approves Big Plan to Help Tribal Communities

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan with a budget of Rs 79,156 crore. This program aims to improve the lives of over five crore tribal people in 63,000 villages.

The initiative focuses on enhancing social infrastructure, health, education, and livelihoods. It will benefit tribal communities in 549 districts and 2,740 blocks across India.

India has a Scheduled Tribe (ST) population of 10.45 crore, according to the 2011 census, with more than 705 tribal communities living in remote areas. The mission includes 25 interventions by 17 ministries and aims to support tribal communities in remote areas, improve school infrastructure, and set up marketing centers for tribal products.

The program will also focus on recognizing and securing forest rights, empowering tribal communities, and providing sustainable livelihoods through government schemes. Special attention will be given to 22 lakh FRA patta holders in forest areas.

Additionally, 100 Tribal Multipurpose Marketing Centres (TMMC) will be established to help tribal producers get fair prices for their products and reduce post-harvest losses.

The Abhiyan is based on the success of the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), launched on November 15, 2023, with a budget of Rs 24,104 crore.
