The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved eight major railway projects worth Rs 24,657 crore. These projects aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 767 crore kilograms, equivalent to planting 30 crore trees.

Environmental Benefits

Minister of Railways and Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that railways are the most environment-friendly transportation mode. The new projects will bring 143 million tons of cargo under rail mode, significantly cutting down carbon emissions.

Key Projects

Three projects will cover Odisha’s southern and western regions, including:

  • Gunupur-Therubali new line (73 kms)
  • Junagarh-Nabarangpur new line (116 kms)
  • Malkangiri-Pandurangapuram via Bhadrachalam new line (173 kms)

These projects will enhance connectivity between Western Odisha, Southern Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, boosting economic and tourism opportunities.

Additional Projects

Three more projects will ensure East Coast port connectivity, covering Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Northern Odisha will benefit from three projects that will complete the northeast corridor connectivity, aiding economic development for the tribal population.

Special Projects

The seventh project is a rail bridge over the River Ganga between Jharkhand and Bihar, known as the Bikramshila-Katareah new line (26 kms), with an investment of Rs 2,459 crore.

The eighth project in Maharashtra will connect Maratwada to Uttar Maharashtra, called the Jalgaon-Jalna new line (174 kms), costing Rs 7,100 crore. This line will also provide connectivity to the Ajanta and Ellora caves, known as the Ajanta Caves Rail Connectivity.
