Prime Minister Modi Announces Delhi Declaration at Asia Pacific Aviation Conference

The 2nd Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation concluded on Thursday with the adoption of the Delhi Declaration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the unanimous passing of the declaration, which aims to enhance regional cooperation and sustainable growth in the aviation sector.

The two-day conference, hosted by India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), took place at Bharat Mandapam. It saw participation from delegates of 29 countries, ministers, policymakers, and 8 international organizations, including ICAO, which celebrated its 80th anniversary during the event.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s technological and infrastructural advancements in aviation, emphasizing the need for inclusivity, especially for women. He noted that 15% of pilots in India are women, compared to the global average of 5%, and mentioned efforts to increase this number further.

Prime Minister Modi also proposed the creation of an ‘International Buddhist Circuit’ to connect holy places related to Lord Buddha across Asia, benefiting the aviation sector and regional economies.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated that under visionary leadership, India aims to have 350-400 airports by 2047, positioning itself as a key player in global aviation. He highlighted India’s role in delivering vaccines across Asia and the Pacific during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Salvatore, President of the ICAO Council, emphasized the importance of maintaining high levels of safety and security in aviation. The conference also featured a presentation on establishing the Pacific Small Island Developing States Liaison Office to support smaller nations in aviation challenges.

The event concluded with the formal adoption of the Delhi Declaration and a ceremony commemorating ICAO’s 80th anniversary and the Chicago Convention.
