India and Malaysia Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India and Malaysia will elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This announcement was made during a joint press statement with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at Hyderabad House in Delhi.

PM Modi expressed his happiness in welcoming Anwar Ibrahim on his first visit to India as the Malaysian premier. He noted that the partnership between India and Malaysia has gained new momentum and energy over the past two years, with Malaysian investments in India reaching over 5 billion dollars last year.

Modi emphasized the potential for increased cooperation in new technology areas such as fintech, semiconductors, AI, and quantum technology. He also announced plans to link India’s UPI with Malaysian Paynet.

Before the joint press statements, India and Malaysia exchanged several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements in the presence of both prime ministers. Earlier in the day, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Anwar Ibrahim to discuss deepening engagement across various domains of partnership.

Anwar Ibrahim, who arrived in New Delhi for a state visit, was warmly received by Union Minister of State, V Somanna. He also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and signed the visitor’s book.

UPI -: UPI stands for Unified Payments Interface. It’s a way to send money using your phone in India.

Malaysian Paynet -: Paynet is a system in Malaysia that helps people send and receive money electronically.

MoUs -: MoUs stand for Memorandums of Understanding. These are agreements between countries to work together on certain things.
