Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh expressed their condolences on the passing of Anshuman Gaekwad, a former Indian cricketer and coach, who died at 71 after battling blood cancer.

Gaekwad was in London until last month and passed away in Baroda. PM Modi took to X to share his grief, stating, “Shri Anshuman Gaekwad Ji will be remembered for his contribution to cricket. He was a gifted player and an outstanding coach. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Harbhajan Singh also shared his sorrow on X, recalling fond memories of making his Test debut under Gaekwad’s coaching. He described Gaekwad as a thorough gentleman and expressed that Indian cricket would be poorer in his absence.

The BCCI and the 1983 World Cup-winning team supported Gaekwad’s treatment. The BCCI had previously stated their commitment to supporting Gaekwad’s family during this crisis.

Gaekwad served as the coach of India twice, first in October 1997 and then in 2000. During his tenure, Anil Kumble achieved the remarkable feat of taking all ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999.

Gaekwad represented India in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs from 1975 to 1987, scoring 1,985 runs in Tests with a highest score of 201 against Pakistan. His cricket career spanned over 22 years, during which he played 205 first-class matches.
