Dili, Timor-Leste, August 11: President Droupadi Murmu announced that India will soon open an embassy in Timor-Leste, strengthening the friendship between the two countries. This announcement was made during her address at a State Banquet hosted by President Jose Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste at Palacio Nobre De Lohane.

President Murmu, who arrived in Timor-Leste after visiting Fiji and New Zealand, emphasized that the new embassy will provide consular services for Indians living in Timor-Leste and improve communication between the two governments. She stated, “As a part of our friendship, we will soon open an embassy in Timor-Leste. This will help in streamlining consular and other services for Indians living in the country. This will also help in improving communication between the governments of both countries.”

President Murmu highlighted the importance of enhancing ties between India and Timor-Leste, referring to it as the ‘Delhi – Dili’ connection. She expressed India’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste in its journey towards progress and development.

She noted that the friendship between India and Timor-Leste is based on shared views on pluralism and sovereignty. Timor-Leste, a young democracy, faces challenges similar to those India has encountered. President Murmu praised Timor-Leste as one of the most vibrant democracies in Southeast Asia, attributing this to the courage and resilience of its people.

President Murmu also mentioned that India was one of the first countries to recognize Timor-Leste’s independence in 2002 and establish political ties. She expressed gratitude to President Jose Ramos-Horta for awarding her the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, the country’s highest civilian award, and for his dedication to fostering close relations with India.

In conclusion, President Murmu reiterated India’s intention to advance its partnership with Timor-Leste and continue building strong relationships with its government and people.
