President Joe Biden Speaks on Middle East Conflict at UN General Assembly

US President Joe Biden expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East during his address at the 79th UN General Assembly. He highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating that ‘innocents in Gaza are going through hell.’ Biden also emphasized the urgent need to address the surge in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Speaking about the October 7 attack, Biden said, ‘Thousands of armed Hamas terrorists invaded a sovereign state, resulting in the loss of over 1,200 lives.’ He added, ‘The world must not flinch from the horrors of October 7. Any country would have the right responsibility to ensure that such an attack can never happen again.’

Biden mentioned that he has met with the families of hostages taken during the attack and grieved with them. He stressed the importance of a diplomatic solution to the conflict, stating, ‘Now is the time for the parties to finalize terms, bring the hostages home, and secure security for Israel and Gaza to be free from Hamas’ grip.’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed grave concern about global conflicts, particularly the war between Russia and Ukraine, and tensions in the Middle East. He warned that ‘Lebanon is at the brink’ amid clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.

The general debate of the 79th session of the General Assembly, themed ‘Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,’ will continue through September 30.
