US President Joe Biden announced on Saturday a new program to train Indo-Pacific counterparts in cervical cancer screening and vaccination. The announcement was made at the Cancer Moonshot event in Wilmington, Delaware, held alongside the Quad Summit.

Key Announcements

President Biden stated, “Next year, doctors and nurses from the US Navy will begin a program to train Indo-Pacific counterparts in conducting cervical cancer screening and vaccination. So we can reach every woman in the region.”

He was accompanied by Quad leaders PM Narendra Modi of India, Australian PM Anthony Albanese, and Japanese PM Fumio Kishida.

Importance of the Initiative

Biden highlighted the critical need for screening and vaccination, noting that cervical cancer claims the lives of 150,000 women annually in the Indo-Pacific region. He emphasized, “We can’t and will not let that continue. The four of us are proud democracies. We’re coming together to deliver more hope for our people.”

The initiative aims to foster collaboration between hospitals, research centers, and cancer foundations, with a focus on increasing investment in screenings, treatment, and research. Biden announced a commitment of over $150 million for HPV screening and therapeutics.
