President Droupadi Murmu’s Historic Visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste

President Droupadi Murmu was warmly received by her Fijian counterpart, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, at the State House in Suva. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen the India-Fiji relationship. President Murmu, on her State visit to Fiji, was also given a traditional ceremonial welcome.

Upon her arrival in Fiji, President Murmu was welcomed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at the airport. This visit marks the first-ever visit by an Indian Head of State to Fiji and aims to enhance the historic ties between the two countries. President Murmu will address Fiji’s Parliament and interact with the Indian diaspora.

Following Fiji, President Murmu will visit New Zealand from August 7-9 at the invitation of Cindy Kiro, Governor General of New Zealand. She will hold a bilateral meeting with Kiro and meet with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Additionally, she will address an education conference and interact with the Indian community.

In the final leg of her tour, President Murmu will travel to Timor-Leste at the invitation of President Jose Ramos-Horta. She will hold engagements on August 10 and meet with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. This visit is the first head-of-state-level visit from India to Timor-Leste.

President Murmu’s visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste highlights the importance India places on bilateral relations with these countries and reflects a strong focus on the Act East Policy, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014.
