President Droupadi Murmu, during her visit to Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, highlighted the cultural similarities between Mauritania and India. This marks the first visit by an Indian President to Mauritania, part of her three-nation tour including Algeria and Malawi from October 13 to 19.

President Murmu emphasized India’s potential contributions to Mauritania’s development in areas like agriculture, health, education, and skill development. She encouraged the Indian community in Mauritania to be part of this cooperative effort. She also mentioned India’s goal of becoming a ‘Developed India’ by 2047, with the support of its overseas community.

Meetings and Cultural Visits

During her visit, President Murmu met with Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. She was warmly welcomed by Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani. Prior to arriving in Mauritania, President Murmu visited Algeria, where she explored historical sites such as the ancient Roman city of Tipasa and the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania, accompanied by Algeria’s Minister of Culture Soraya Mouloudji and Tipaza Governor Aboubakr Boucetta.
