On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu laid the foundation stone for the Indore-Ujjain Six Lane Road Project in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. She also attended the ‘Safai Mitra Sammelan’ and honored sanitation workers, praising Madhya Pradesh for its achievements in urban and rural sanitation.

Historical Significance of Ujjain

In her address, President Murmu highlighted Ujjain’s rich history, referring to it by its ancient name, Avantika. She mentioned that Ujjain was a significant city during the Gupta period and an important center for transportation and international trade 2000 years ago. The President also paid homage to the holy Kshipra river and Baba Mahakal.

Development Efforts in Madhya Pradesh

President Murmu spoke about various development projects in Madhya Pradesh, including the construction of expressways, elevated corridors, and the Vikram Udyogpuri Medical Devices Park. She wished success for these initiatives.

Nationwide Cleanliness Campaign

The President emphasized the importance of cleanliness, stating that it has become a nationwide campaign in India. She set a goal to achieve complete cleanliness by 2025, aiming for total freedom from open defecation and excellence in waste management. She praised Madhya Pradesh for its leading position in sanitation, noting that Indore has been declared the cleanest city in India for the seventh consecutive time, and Bhopal the cleanest capital.

Honoring Sanitation Workers

President Murmu honored sanitation workers, calling them frontline cleanliness warriors. She assured that efforts are being made to protect their safety, dignity, and welfare, including the elimination of man-holes in favor of machine-holes.

Chief Minister’s Remarks

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav called the day historic, celebrating the inauguration of the 6-lane road project worth Rs 1692 crore. He emphasized that this project will connect Ujjain not only to Indore but to the entire country. He also highlighted the ongoing cleanliness fortnight from September 17 to October 2, which underscores the Prime Minister’s commitment to cleanliness.
