President Droupadi Murmu Highlights India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor as a Gamechanger
President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the significance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) during her address to Parliament, calling it a major gamechanger of the 21st century. She highlighted India’s strengthened relations with neighboring countries and its proactive role in global crises.
Murmu noted, “Following the Neighbourhood First policy, India has strengthened its relations with the neighbouring countries. Leaders of seven neighbouring countries participated in the swearing-in ceremony of the Union Council of Ministers on June 9.”
The IMEC, supported by countries like the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union, was formalized during the G20 Summit held in New Delhi last year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the corridor, comparing its potential impact to that of the historic Silk Route.
President Murmu also highlighted India’s leadership in uniting the world on various issues, including the inclusion of the African Union as the 27th member of the G20 during India’s presidency. She stated, “This has strengthened the trust of the African continent as well as the entire Global South.”
Additionally, a breakthrough was achieved on the first day of the New Delhi G20 Summit with a consensus on the “Ukraine paragraphs” and the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration.
