New Delhi [India], August 14: President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) to Wing Commander Akshay Arun Mahale for his exceptional bravery during a critical flight on September 26, 2023.
According to the Ministry of Defence, Mahale was flying a low-level aerobatics display sortie over a lake near a populated area when he experienced a severe engine issue. The aircraft’s thrust dropped, and the Turbine Gas Temperature rose dangerously. Despite the critical situation, Mahale maintained his composure and turned the aircraft away from the populated area.
Mahale descended and used the limited height available to accelerate the aircraft, engaging the reheat on the serviceable engine to climb away safely. His quick actions prevented a catastrophic situation, saving both civilian lives and a national asset.
The Ministry praised Mahale’s courage, leadership, and professionalism, stating that his actions averted a potential disaster. For his exceptional bravery, Wing Commander Akshay Arun Mahale was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry).
