President Biden Announces New Security Aid for Ukraine and Upcoming Leader Meeting in Germany
US President Joe Biden has announced a significant increase in security assistance for Ukraine to help the country in its ongoing war against Russia. He also revealed plans to hold a leader-level meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Germany next month.
Support for Ukraine
In a statement from the White House, President Biden said, “I will convene a leader-level meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Germany next month to coordinate the efforts of the more than 50 countries supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.”
Biden highlighted that Ukraine has successfully won the battle of Kyiv and reclaimed more than half of the territory initially seized by Russia. He expressed pride in welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy back to the White House, emphasizing the US’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom.
New Security Measures
Biden announced a surge in security assistance for Ukraine, including the allocation of all remaining security assistance funding by the end of his term. This includes USD 5.5 billion in Presidential Drawdown Authority to ensure full utilization of the funds appropriated by Congress.
The US Department of Defense will provide USD 2.4 billion in security assistance through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. This will include additional air defense, unmanned aerial systems, and air-to-ground munitions, as well as support for Ukraine’s defense industrial base and maintenance needs.
Enhanced Capabilities
To boost Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities, Biden has decided to provide the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) long-range munition. Additionally, the US will refurbish and supply an extra Patriot air defense battery and more Patriot missiles to Ukraine.
Biden also announced expanded training for Ukrainian F-16 pilots, with plans to support the training of 18 more pilots next year.
Countering Russian Evasion
The US Department of Justice, the Department of the Treasury, and the US Secret Service have taken action to disrupt a global cryptocurrency network used for Russian sanctions evasion and money laundering, in coordination with international partners.
