On October 6, Nepal welcomed a new Chief Justice, Prakashman Singh Raut, who officially took office in a ceremony at Shital Niwas, the President’s Office. This event followed his appointment by Nepali President Ram Chandra Paudel, based on a recommendation from the parliamentary hearing committee. The committee had unanimously endorsed Raut on October 2, and his appointment was confirmed under Article 129, Clause 2 of the Constitution, following a proposal by the Constitutional Council on September 16.
The Chief Justice position became available after Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha retired on October 5, having reached the age of 65. Raut’s swearing-in was attended by notable figures such as Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, and National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal, highlighting the event’s importance.
Raut, who has been a Supreme Court Justice since August 1, 2016, holds a law degree from Nepal Law Campus at Tribhuvan University. His legal career spans from 1983 to 2016, during which he specialized in civil, criminal, and constitutional law. He also served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association in 2006. As Chief Justice, Raut is expected to lead Nepal’s judiciary in upholding justice and the rule of law.
